Background of the study
Semantic networks refer to the mental organization of word meanings and the relationships between lexical items. In the Tiv language, semantic networks are shaped by rich cultural practices and indigenous knowledge systems. This study assesses how Tiv speakers organize their vocabulary into interconnected semantic fields that reflect everyday life, traditional practices, and environmental interactions (Shomuyiwa, 2023). Through detailed lexical analysis and field interviews in Benue State, the research maps out semantic relationships among Tiv words related to kinship, agriculture, and social norms. The study also explores how modern influences such as urbanization and language contact have reconfigured these networks, leading to shifts in meaning and usage. By combining qualitative data from ethnographic observations with quantitative analyses of word associations, the research aims to reveal the underlying cognitive structures that drive semantic organization in Tiv. These insights will contribute to broader theories of lexical semantics and support language documentation and educational initiatives aimed at preserving indigenous knowledge (Agba, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of semantic networks in understanding indigenous languages, there is limited research on how these networks are structured in the Tiv language. Preliminary observations suggest that external influences are reshaping traditional semantic relationships, potentially leading to loss of cultural nuance and vocabulary erosion. This study seeks to document and analyze these networks to support language preservation efforts.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant because it enhances our understanding of the cognitive and cultural organization of vocabulary in Tiv. Its findings will contribute to language documentation and support efforts to maintain indigenous semantic structures in a changing world.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the Tiv language in Benue State and focuses exclusively on semantic networks. It does not address other linguistic domains such as syntax or phonology.
